Antonella Jones

Antonella Jones: The Quiet Bell, a fictional scene

Original fiction about an imagined Antonella Jones and a bell with a ribbon inside. Bell, shop and actions are invented.

A sound kept back

The Antonella in this story enters a small shop and taps a counter bell. Nothing rings. A soft ribbon has been tucked under its edge, holding the little metal parts apart.

A note beside it says please leave one quiet sound. Antonella taps again, more gently, and hears the faintest click of her own fingernail.

A different announcement

The imagined Antonella writes click on a slip of paper and leaves it by the note. Before she goes, she notices other slips: a sleeve against wood, a page turned slowly, one breath before a question.

The shopkeeper appears without a bell announcing him. In the fictional shop, the quiet bell has collected a whole set of arrivals, each small enough to hear only when someone waits.
